Sexualities, Race and Empire: Resistance in an Uncertain Time

Sexualities, Race and Empire: Resistance in an Uncertain Time

Wednesday, September 05, 2018

Professor Jessica Fields was on the steering committee for Sexualities, Race and Empire: Resistance in an Uncertain Time, a meeting held August 9-10 in Philadelphia. Organized by the Section on Sexualities Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA), the pre-conference preceded ASA’s annual meeting and marked the occasion of the section’s 20-year anniversary. It highlighted the connections of sexuality, race, affect and emotion, empire, inequality and resistance in a variety of sites and contexts. Attendees unpacked the physical and emotional violence enacted against racialized and sexualized others and challenged themselves as researchers, theorists and educators to better understand intersecting oppressions — and to identify strategies for resistance.
